POLARITY DISSOLUTION
Also known as "Equanimity Procedure, this is a practice for enhancing non-attachment. One of the more notable goals of spiritual enlightenment is the practice of non-attachment. How do you know whether or not you are attached to something? When you are rooting for one answer over another, you instantly form an attachment.
Flip a coin. Do you care if it lands on heads or tails? If it lands on heads or tails and your reaction is the same, you are not attached. If you are attached to the coin landing on either heads or tails, you can practice Polarity Dissolution.
Imagine putting one choice or outcome inside your closed left hand as if you are holding it. Put the other outcome in your closed right hand. Now imagine the left hand becoming realized. Sit with that feeling for a while. Then imagine the right hand being realized. Does it feel the same? Does one hand feel better than the other? If they feel the same, you are not attached. If they feel different, you very well may be.
You can use this practice with any possible outcomes. If one hand (one outcome) feels better than the other (an opposite outcome), an attachment exists. If the situation calls for no attachment, rub your hands together. After rubbing them together for a while, take them apart again. How does each closed hand feel now? If they do not feel the same, you may be still rooting for one outcome over the other. If that is the case, bring both hands together again and repeat the rubbing practice. After a while, separate them again. How do they feel now? Repeat this procedure as often as necessary until both hands feel the same.
